Chairman Akaka swears-in Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and several of his school administrators in a subcommittee hearing on Mayor Fenty’s recently approved proposal to assume control of the D.C. Public Schools.  A former teacher and school administrator, Senator Akaka is Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management, the Federal Workforce and the District of Columbia.  Chairman Akaka swears-in Washington, D.C. Senator Akaka at a Senator Akaka at a "Preserve America" grants event in Washington, D.C., with John Nau, Chairman of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, Katie Kastner, Architectural Historian at the Hawaii State Historic Preservation Division of DLNR, and Dirk Kempthorne, Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Hawaii was presented with grants of over $200,000 benefiting the preservation of historic Chinatown and Ewa Villages.

Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo presents Senator Akaka with the Order of the Golden Heart.  As Chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Akaka recently fought to secure passage of a bill which honors the service of Filipino Veterans who fought under U.S. command during World War II by restoring the benefits and recognition they were promised over half a century ago. Senator Akaka welcomes Barbara Favela to his office.  Barbara's husband Steve, a Honolulu Police Officer, was tragically killed in the line of duty while protecting the President of the United States in a motorcade last year at Hickam Air Force Base.  Accompanying Barabara are their children: Keahi (8), Kiana (6), Matthew (3) and Jacob (9 months).  Sen. Akaka offered Barbara his sympathy for her loss, reminded her of the important and honorable work Steve did as a member of the Honolulu Police Department, and assured her that her husband will never be forgotten.
