Scientific Research

For many years, Senator Rockefeller has been a national leader for the EPSCoR program, an initiative to ensure that underserved states like West Virginia get a fair chance and a better share of federal grants from top scientific agencies like the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health and others. In 2002, WV EPSCoR secured $15.5 million in funding from the National Science Foundation which is the highest amount ever for the state. This includes funding to Marshall University for cell research and molecular biology, which is important for Marshall's work on forensics. West Virginia University has secured funding for one-of-a kind biometric research, which has become increasingly important in the years since the September 11th terrorist attacks. West Virginia business leaders are also participating in the Small Business Innovation Development program to start new initiatives.
