Lieberman Lauds Submarine Contract

WASHINGTON, DC -- Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) today lauded the completion of a $14 billion contract between the U.S. Navy and General Dynamics Electric Boat for the construction of eight Virginia-class submarines through fiscal year 2013, and two submarines a year from 2011.

"I congratulate the skilled workers of Electric Boat, who have earned this contract by building the world’s best submarines,” said Lieberman.  “They have consistently delivered Virginia-class submarines on time, and have saved the taxpayers billions of dollars through such initiatives as the Design for Affordability Program.  This contract recognizes that Connecticut is the ‘Submarine Center of Excellence' for the United States, and will allow our workforce to deliver a new boat every year from 2011.”

As a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and its Subcommittee on Seapower, Senator Lieberman worked with his colleagues and the Connecticut delegation to authorize this multi-year contract in the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act.
