Help with Federal Agencies

Responding to the needs of New Mexicans has always been Senator Domenici's top priority. As your Senator, he is your advocate with the federal government. If you are experiencing a problem with a federal government agency or a quasi-federal entity that you have been unable to resolve through direct contact with that agency, Senator Domenici and his staff can assist you in resolving the problem.

Throughout his many years in the Senate, Senator Domenici has helped New Mexico residents resolve problems involving Social Security disability claims, Medicare, immigration, veterans benefits/claims, federal income taxes, U.S. Postal Service, and the military, to name a few. For a complete listing of federal agencies and quasi-federal entities click here.

Step One: Determine Jurisdiction

The Senator is unable to assist with legal problems due to the Separation of Powers Doctrine contained in the U.S. Constitution. Resolution of these matters must be pursued through the judicial system. The Lawyer Referral Service can provide you with a list of attorneys located in your area. In addition, the Legal Services Network provides legal consultations via phone for $30.00 for 30 minutes, with no income limitations. They can also refer those who cannot afford to pay to other available services. You can obtain information regarding both of these programs through the N.M. State Bar Association by phoning 505/797-6000 or logging onto their web site at www.nmbar.org.

The Senator has no authority as a United States Senator to intervene in matters that fall under the jurisdiction of the State of New Mexico. Some examples of state matters are: welfare, food stamps, child support, insurance regulation, utility regulation, or motor vehicle registration. You should contact the Governor or your State Legislators for assistance with these matters. You can obtain a complete listing of state agencies and contact information for the Office of the Governor and/or your State Legislators by logging onto the State of New Mexico web site at www.state.nm.

Once you have determined that your problem involves a federal agency and you wish to request assistance from Senator Domenici, you should follow the instructions below. If you need further clarification or help in determining jurisdiction regarding your particular problem, please feel free to contact the Senator's office which serves your county.

Step Two: Print and Complete a Privacy Release Authorization Form

The Privacy Act of 1974 requires written permission from you authorizing the Senator to initiate an inquiry on your behalf. Click here to view and print the Privacy Authorization Form.

Please complete and sign the Privacy Authorization form. It is important for you to provide a detailed description of your problem in the "Problem Section" of the form. Please feel free to attach additional pages if necessary.

Step Three: Mail Privacy Authorization/Documentation to Appropriate Office

Please mail copies of all documentation to the Senator's office which serves your particular county. Medical records should not be mailed to the Senator's office.

Congressional Inquiry Process

Upon receipt of your completed Privacy Authorization Form and all relevant documentation, the Senator will initiate a formal written inquiry with the Congressional Liaison Office of the appropriate federal agency. At that time correspondence from the Senator will also be sent to you explaining that he has taken action on your case. It is the Senator's policy to allow the agency 20-30 days to respond to his inquiry. If the Senator has not received a response within the allotted time he will initiate further correspondence with the agency. Upon receipt of a final response to the Senator's inquiry, it will be immediately forwarded to you for your review. If you have questions regarding the agency response or require additional information, it will be necessary to provide your request in writing to the Senator's office so that he may initiate a follow-up inquiry.
