Sen. Salazar Announces Nearly $350,000 in Funding to Improve Safety in Colorado Schools

PUEBLO, CO – Today, United States Senator Ken Salazar congratulated the cities of Colorado Springs, Craig and Canon City for receiving a combined total of nearly $350,000 in school safety resource grants from the U.S. Department of Justice’s (USDOJ) Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS. The grants were awarded under the COPS Secure Our Schools Program, of which Senator Salazar has been a champion, and which aims to bolster efforts to improve security and deter crime at public schools across the nation.

“As Colorado’s Attorney General and now as a United States Senator, I have fought to keep our kids and our schools safe,” said Senator Salazar. “With this funding, these communities will have the resources they need to ensure our children benefit from a safe and secure schooling environment that will allow them to learn, thrive and grow.”

The nearly $350,000 in grant funding will provide up to fifty percent of the total cost for these municipalities to conduct security assessments, provide training, and acquire equipment that can help deter crime in public schools.

Created in 1995 under legislation introduced by Senator Joe Biden (D-DE), COPS has invested more than $11.3 billion to advance community policing, including grants awarded to more than 13,600 state and local law enforcement agencies.
