Sen. Salazar: Economic Pain Extends from Wall Street to Main Street

PUEBLO, CO – Today, United States Senator Ken Salazar made the following statement regarding the latest turmoil in the financial markets and the growing economic pain that middle class families are feeling:

“The latest news from Wall Street is another blow to the economy and only adds to the uncertainty that American families are feeling.

“I hope that the financial markets will be able to withstand the latest developments, and I appreciate the work of Secretary Paulson and others on Wall Street to contain the crisis as much as possible.

“Nonetheless, the situation on Wall Street and in our financial institutions shows the consequences of the inadequate oversight and regulation of the last few years. We will continue to learn more about what happened to Lehman Brothers and others in the coming days and weeks, but we can no longer tolerate the policy of ‘anything goes.’

“As Wall Street tries to regain its balance, we cannot forget that these financial crises have an effect on the millions of American families who are facing foreclosure, whose jobs are in peril, or who are finding it harder and harder to pay their bills. In the coming days, Congress should take additional action to help American families weather the storm, by passing a second round of economic stimulus legislation.”
