Sen. Salazar Applauds Citizen, Federal Response to Hurricane Gustav

Recognizes Contributions of Coloradans to Recovery Effort

DENVER, CO – Today, United States Senator Ken Salazar released the following statement regarding the federal response to Hurricane Gustav:

“While Hurricane Gustav did not cause damage on the scale of Hurricane Katrina, residents of the Gulf Coast region are still contending with flooding, widespread power outages, and displacement from their homes. As the Gulf Coast recovers, I join all Americans in offering my support and my commitment to helping the residents of the region rebuild.

“As Gustav demonstrates, the government’s capacity to respond to natural disasters has improved since the failed response to Hurricane Katrina. Stronger coordination between federal emergency relief agencies and state and local officials ensured that residents in the region were evacuated in a swift but orderly fashion and were provided shelter and food as they waited out the storm. This coordinated response saved lives. I am heartened by this progress and will continue to solicit the input of first responders and relief agencies to see where improvements can be made.

“Colorado is also doing its part. I applaud the citizen-soldiers of the Colorado National Guard who are currently on the ground on the Gulf Coast, the men and women coordinating relief efforts from U.S. Northern Command at Peterson Air Force Base, and the Coloradans who have volunteered their time and donated supplies to assist those affected. Their efforts, along with those of other Americans across the country, have already helped tens of thousands on the Gulf Coast get through the worst.”
