Sen. Salazar Pushes for Extended Public Comment Period on NISP Proposal

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, in a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers, United States Senator Ken Salazar asked that local communities, stakeholders, and the public be given additional time to comment on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Northern Integrated Supply Project (NISP), a proposed water infrastructure project intended to provide additional water to communities in northern Colorado. Senator Salazar’s request for a public comment period extension of at least 45 days follows requests from several entities, including the City of Fort Collins and the City of Greeley, for more time to analyze and review the proposal.

“It is important for the affected local governments and citizens of the area to have adequate time to make informed decisions and comments about NISP during this important phase of the project,” wrote Senator Salazar. “At the same time, the 15 northern Colorado cities and water districts that are partnering with the Northern Water Conservancy District to build NISP need to know that the Army Corps’ analysis will move forward in a timely manner. To accommodate these various interests, I request that the Corps extend the DEIS comment period for at least an additional 45 days beyond the current deadline at the end of July, 2008.”
