WASHINGTON, D.C. – United States Senator Ken Salazar sent letters to President Bush, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid yesterday pressing all three leaders to push for comprehensive immigration reform when the Senate reconvenes next week. In Sen. Salazar’s letter to the President he states, “As the former Governor of Texas, I know you are well acquainted with challenges so many American communities are facing because of the federal government’s inability to reform our immigration laws. In Colorado, I have met several times with leaders from business, agriculture, labor, civil rights, and faith communities. They have urged us to work in a bi-partisan manner to enact sensible solutions to our immigration challenges. Their message has been simple and clear: we need reform now.” And in a letter to Senators Frist and Reid, Salazar urges, “We were so close, before the recess, to delivering on our responsibilities. I believe it is imperative that Members on both sides of the aisle work to put the Senate back on course to consider comprehensive immigration reform legislation.” Senator Salazar has worked closely with a dedicated, bipartisan group of Senators, such as McCain, Kennedy, Graham (SC) and others, to create comprehensive immigration reform that strengthens the Nation’s border security, increases enforcement and deals with the economic realities of the immigration situation.
