Shelby Announces $ 725,000 for Auburn University

December 10, 2008

Washington, D.C. -

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Services has awarded $725,000 to Auburn University.  Researchers at Auburn will use this funding to develop state-of-the art genetic mapping that is needed to create new disease prevention technologies for catfish.  Senator Shelby was instrumental in securing this funding.

“Alabama’s catfish industry continues to be a major source of economic development in the state,” said Shelby. “However, the industry faces significant threats from foreign competition.  For this reason, we must ensure that our catfish population is strong and healthy, as well as capable of withstanding both endemic and emerging diseases and disorders.”
