DOLE ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $2 MILLION FOR HISTORICALLY BLACK UNIVERSITIES IN NORTH CAROLINA

September 9th, 2008 - Washington, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded over $2 million in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) grant funding to three North Carolina universities: North Carolina Central University, North Carolina A&T State University and Winston-Salem State University. All three universities will use the grants to initiate or improve homeownership and business projects in their local communities.

“I applaud these institutions for the steps they are taking to improve their communities,” said Dole. “North Carolina’s universities are on the front lines of workforce and economic development, and I am pleased this funding will help bolster entrepreneurship and homeownership in our state.”

According to HUD, North Carolina Central University, in Durham, will receive $695,077 to establish its Building Minority Ownership Project (BMOP), which will address low rates of home and business ownership, as well as organizational capacity gaps that impede the efforts of community and faith-based groups in the area surrounding the campus. BMOP will significantly expand activities initiated by the 2002 Community Economic Development Initiative (NCCU-CEDI). NCCU will also construct two houses near the campus, enabling homeownership for two low-income or very-low-income families.

North Carolina A&T State University, in Greensboro, will use a HUD grant of $698,531 to establish, stabilize and expand small and minority-owned businesses. Among the planned initiatives, N.C. A&T will provide a business education and mentoring program designed to assist entrepreneurs, increase the capacity of the university’s BEST Center to assist small businesses, provide micro loans for program tenants and graduates to be used as working capital and offer a “Young-Preneurs” initiative, which aims to encourage entrepreneurship as a viable option for disadvantaged youth.

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) intends to use its grant of $700,000 to purchase and renovate office space, add new tenants, lease space below market to low- and moderate-income entrepreneurs and provide them with technical assistance from the WSSU School of Business and Economic Center for Entrepreneurship.
