Sessions Congratulates AL “Angels in Adoption” Recipient

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) today announced that Susan Stewart Smith of Marshall County has been named a 2008 Angels in Adoption award recipient.

Smith will receive the award at the Angels in Adoption gala tonight in Washington D.C.

Angels in Adoption, sponsored by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, is a public awareness program that allows members of Congress the opportunity to honor individuals or organizations that have enriched the lives of foster children or orphans.

“I am pleased to announce Susan Stewart Smith as my 2008 ‘Angel in Adoption’ honoree,” Sessions said. “She has shown compassion and dedication to the children of Alabama who are in need of safe and loving homes. I commend her for her successful efforts, and am proud to present her with this important award. Susan truly is a gift to so many.”

Sessions met with Smith in his Washington D.C. office this afternoon.

Smith is a program supervisor for Marshall County’s Foster Care-Adoption division. In the past year, under Smith’s leadership, the number of adoptions in Marshall County has quadrupled. Smith’s efforts also extend state-wide: she recently led state foster care-adoption workers in the implementation of a comprehensive child tracking system to help caretakers ensure the well-being of orphaned and foster children as they move throughout the state.

This year, the CCAI is celebrating its 10-year anniversary of honoring outstanding persons and organizations in the fields of adoption and foster care. CCAI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to raising awareness about the millions of orphans around the world in need of permanent and safe home. The organization also works to eliminate the barriers that hinder orphans from realizing their basic right of a family.

The Congressional Coalition on Adoption (CCA) was created in 1985 as a bicameral, bipartisan caucus of members of Congress dedicated to improving adoption policy and practice, and to focusing public attention on the advantages of adoption. Sen. Sessions is a member of CCA.

Since the Angels in Adoption program began in 1999, over 1,300 “Angels” have received this honor.
