Sessions Announces Funding For South Alabama

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) today announced funding for several important projects in South Alabama, including $1 million for the I-10 Connector near Dothan and $1.4 million to help rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Funding for the projects is included in the Fiscal Year 2009 Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations bill, which was approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee last week. In all, Sessions announced $5.5 million worth of funding for critical infrastructure and recovery projects in the state.

The report on the legislation, which was made available today, includes the following projects in South Alabama:

• $1 million to continue construction of the I-10 Connector between I-10 and US 231 near Dothan.

“The I-10 connector is an extremely important project in the Wiregrass region and has been one of my transportation priorities in Southeast Alabama,” Sessions said. “I am pleased that $1 million has been included to move the project forward. This important transportation link will promote economic growth in Dothan and throughout the area.”

$1.4 million to Mobile County assist Volunteers of America Southeast to rebuild and redevelop houses destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005. Volunteers of America, a non-profit charity organization, successfully rebuilt homes destroyed by the historic storm.

“I have been greatly impressed with the work of Volunteers of America in Mobile County after Hurricane Katrina. VOA volunteers responded quickly and went straight to work, resulting in new homes for many who were displaced by the storm,” Sessions said. “Their work embodies the spirit of a community working together to rebuild, and I applaud their efforts. This funding will allow their fine work to continue.”

• $500,000 for the transportation system at the University of Alabama, including buses and facilities.

“The University of Alabama has experienced tremendous growth in ridership along with their dramatic enrollment increase in recent years.” Sessions said. “This funding will allow the University to expand its existing transit systems on campus, including bus service for students and faculty.”

• $2 million to strengthen and resurface runways and access surfaces at Mobile Regional Airport in Mobile.

“The launch of major manufacturing facilities in the Mobile area creates the need to accept larger aircraft at Mobile Regional Airport,” Sessions said. “The airport’s runways have been in need of repairs for some time, so I am pleased that this $2 million will allow for expansion and surface improvements to access new facilities at the airport, including the EADS CASA complex. This investment in the airport’s critical infrastructure will continue to pay dividends as Mobile’s economy continues to grow in the years ahead.”

The legislation awaits consideration by the full Senate. Inclusion in the committee proposal is an indicator that funding for the projects will be included in the final legislation approved by Congress.
