Sessions Announces Funding for North Alabama

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) today announced funding for several important projects in Alabama, including $350,000 for transportation improvements in downtown Decatur.

Funding for the projects is included in the Fiscal Year 2009 Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations bill, which was approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee last week. In all, Sessions announced $5.5 million worth of funding for critical infrastructure and recovery projects in the state.

The report on the legislation, which was made available today, includes:

• $250,000 to assist with the construction of sidewalks and the installation of lighting and traffic signals along Highway 75 in the City of Center Point.

“Safe streets and a pedestrian- friendly atmosphere will lead to greater foot traffic in the commercial district of Center Point, which continues to grow,” Sessions said. “New lighting, traffic signals, and sidewalks will all help make the district safer for pedestrians.”

• $350,000 to replace traffic signals and provide landscaping, irrigation, and brick paving along streetscapes in Decatur.

“Decatur is a place of rich southern heritage and colorful history,” Sessions said. “I am pleased that this $350,000 will allow city leaders to further enhance the beauty of the historic downtown area. Improving the flow of traffic and repairing sidewalks have been local priorities for city leaders.”

• $500,000 for the transportation system at the University of Alabama, including buses and facilities.

“The University of Alabama has experienced tremendous growth in ridership along with their dramatic enrollment increase in recent years, ,” Sessions said. “This funding will allow the University to expand its existing transit systems on campus, including bus service for students and faculty.”

The legislation awaits consideration by the full Senate. Inclusion in the committee proposal is an indicator that funding for the projects will be included in the final legislation approved by Congress.
