Snowe Announces $874,249 in Emergency Food and Shelter Program Funds for Maine

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) today announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded $874,249 to twelve counties in Maine as part of its Emergency Food and Shelter (EFS) Program for Fiscal Year 2009.
"With the recent report that 189,000 Mainers are on food stamps- a record high for Maine- and with more than 8,000 people facing homelessness in our state, we must do more to help those in need," Senator Snowe said. "These FEMA funds will aid social service agencies across Maine cope with the rising demand for assistance. As the recession continues to force job cuts and home foreclosures, it’s imperative that we work to expand the availability and quality of food, shelter, and supportive services for the country’s needy."
FEMA’s Emergency Food and Shelter (EFS) Program allots grants to social service agencies across the country to help feed the hungry and shelter the homeless. The EFS funds are utilized to provide food, shelter, rent, mortgage, and utility assistance programs for people with non-disaster related emergencies.

York County- $131,524
