| Martin Luther King-Harbor Hospital will play host to newly elected Congresswoman Laura Richardson’s (CA-37) local oath of office ceremony Saturday, September 22, 2007 at 1 p.m. Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-35) will officiate. Confirmed attendees include: Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke, Assemblymembers Mervyn M. Dymally (D-Compton) and Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles), Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, members of the Long Beach, Compton, Carson, Lakewood, and Signal Hill city councils, community leaders, clergy, and constituents. WHAT: Local Oath of Office Ceremony WHERE: Martin Luther King Hospital 12021 South Wilmington Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90059 OPEN PRESS: Press Entrance: Main Entrance on Wilmington Ave. Press Arrivals: 12:00 p.m. BACKGROUND: In 2006, after serving six years as a Long Beach City Councilwoman, Laura Richardson won a seat in the California State Assembly in the 55th District serving as the Assistant Speaker pro Tempore in the Assembly. She was recognized as the first African-American woman, South Bay representative, and freshman to hold this prestigious position. In the State Legislature, Richardson was dedicated to expanding access to health care, empowering public education, and ensuring safe neighborhoods. Richardson succeeded 16 candidates in a special election and was elected to her first term in the House of Representatives to represent California’s culturally and economically diverse 37th Congressional District making her the 26th African-American female to be elected to the United States Congress. She holds the distinction of having served all three levels of government, local, State, and Federal, in the span of one year. California’s 37th Congressional District includes the diverse communities of Long Beach, Compton, Carson, Watts, Willowbrook, and Signal Hill. |
