Making Strides Towards ’25 As rising environmental, economic and security pressures continue to drive the need to develop clean, efficient and reliable alternatives to oil and other fossil fuels, members of the 110th United States Congress have taken great strides to bolster and expand America’s renewable energy portfolio. In June of this year, we lauded the historic Senate passage of H.R. 6, the Renewable Fuels, Consumer Protection, and Energy Efficiency Act of 2007, which included a number of provisions to help reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil and increase the amount of clean, renewable energy we produce here at home. Included in this landmark legislation was an amendment I introduced establishing a National goal of producing 25 percent of America’s energy from renewable sources by 2025, also known as 25x’25. I am pleased to state that support for this initiative has only grown as the months have progressed. Last week a 25x’25 resolution was passed overwhelmingly by my colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives, strengthening our National efforts to expand renewable energy production in the United States over the next two decades. I congratulate members of the House on this achievement, and promise to continue to work with my colleagues in both chambers of Congress to ensure the energy bill we send to President Bush will include this important resolution. Contributing to a Clean Energy Future In my last renewable energy newsletter, I invited each of you to share how you, your household or your business have taken steps to lower energy bills, save electricity, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and help save our planet. The response was amazing, as several hundred of you submitted ideas and suggestions on how we can each play a part in saving energy and altering the course of our Nation’s future for the better. Here are some excerpts from your responses on how we can each do our part to help:
These are just a few examples of simple, cost-effective ways each of us can help tackle our National energy concerns at the individual level. For more suggestions and details on how you, your home or your business can play a part in altering America’s energy future, please take the time to visit the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) list of 12 things you can do to help combat climate change. I remain confident that through
a concerted and determined partnership of individuals, private businesses
and public entities, our Nation will help build a strong foundation for
a new, clean energy future for years to come. Thank you for your continued
interest and support. Sincerely, Ken Salazar
