Dear Friends:

As we begin a new year, I especially thank you for taking time to read The Lugar Letter and following the U.S. Senate.  This first issue of the 2008 Lugar Letter shares our news of December 2007; archives of the 2007 and 2006 issues are available on The Lugar Letter page.

December was highlighted by the annual Richard G. Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow’s Leaders at the University of Indianapolis.  We started the Symposium my first year in the Senate, and we are now celebrating 31 years and more than 15,000 high school participants from throughout Indiana.  This day is designed to give young Hoosiers the opportunity to use their ingenuity to address issues facing our country and to think through ways they might become one of tomorrow’s leaders.

As with each year, I was impressed by the Symposium participants – their eagerness to learn, thoughtful questions and insights into life and the future of our state and country.

Significant legislative activity also accompanied the end of 2007 and the Legislative Update contains recent news on the farm bill, energy bill and the omnibus appropriations bill.

I wish you every continuing success and a Happy New Year in 2008.

Sincerely,

Dick Lugar
