Dear Friends:

Thank you for your ongoing interest in my activities and for reading this month’s Lugar Letter.

Having recently returned from a trip to Indiana, I wanted to share with you some highlights of an Earth Day Celebration on my farm in Marion County to recognize the partnership between Chicago Climate Exchange and National Farmers Union that allows Indiana farmers and landowners to earn greenhouse gas emissions credits when they practice conservation tillage, or plant grasses and trees.  I also had the opportunity to visit with teachers and students at Longfellow Middle School in Indianapolis to focus on the school’s experience with the No Child Left Behind law.

This issue of the Lugar Letter also includes information on legislation I have recently introduced to create new international nuclear safeguards, address energy efficiency and increase health insurance for uninsured, low-income children.

April was also a busy month in our Washington, D.C. office as we welcomed Hoosier school groups and visitors to the Capitol Building during spring break trips and the National Cherry Blossom Festival.  In total, our staff gave tours of the Capitol Building to more than 1,000 Hoosiers this past month.

Thank you as always for your thoughts and suggestions.  I wish you every continuing success and look forward to hearing of your views.

Sincerely,

Dick Lugar

Team Lugar Wins Again

Team Lugar

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar’s team finished first in the Senate division at the 26th Annual Capital Challenge 3-mile race to benefit the D.C. Special Olympics.  It was the 8th time Senator Lugar’s team has won the Senate division.

Senator Lugar is the only person to have run in all 26 races.  He was captain and one of five runners on his official team.  Other Senate staff ran the race as well.

Senator Lugar’s teams have finished in first place in 1988, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2007.  His teams finished second in 1987, 1994, 1996, 1999, 2004, and 2005.
