SEN. VOINOVICH STATEMENT ON AUTO INDUSTRY

December 19, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator George V. Voinovich (R-OH), Co-Chair of the Senate Auto Caucus, today released the following statement after President Bush announced help was on the way to the American auto industry:

“On behalf of all Ohioans, I am grateful the president stepped in to help thwart a disaster that would have sent our state over the cliff. I spoke again yesterday with White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten urging them to act by today because the dominoes are falling. The president has supplied oxygen to a patient fighting to get healthy through restructuring and becoming more competitive. My only regret is that Sen. Levin and I couldn’t convince Congress to get this done back before Thanksgiving when our bipartisan compromise was completed. I’m pleased that the president’s plan models the protections to taxpayers that we provided in our legislation. While we are not out of the woods, there are millions of hard-working Americans today who can breathe easier this holiday season.”
