Alexander, Corker: Hemlock Semiconducter Announcement is Monumental, Means Tennessee Jobs and Greater Energy Security

December 15th, 2008 - CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - U.S. Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Bob Corker (R-TN) today issued reactions to the announcement that Hemlock Semiconductor Corp. (HSC) - a subsidiary of Dow Corning - plans to invest up to $2.5 billion to build a facility in Clarksville to expand its production of polysilicon – a key raw material used to manufacture solar cells. According to Dow Corning, the investment will immediately create 1,000 construction jobs in Tennessee and lead to 900 new, permanent jobs at the facility.

“Today’s announcement is huge and welcome good news,” said Alexander. “It means a cleaner world and better jobs for Tennesseans. I congratulate Governor Bredesen and Clarksville-Montgomery County and pledge to do everything I can to help this project succeed.”

“Especially in this economic environment, an announcement of this magnitude is a true testament to Clarksville, to our state, and to Governor Bredesen and Commissioner Kisber who have once again been successful in attracting a great company to Tennessee. I was proud to join them, Mayor Piper, Mayor Bowers and other members of the Clarksville community in this effort that will forever change the Clarksville area,” said Corker. “This announcement is not only good for the regional economy but also marks a significant investment by a major company in transitioning our country to the renewable energy sources that make us more energy secure.”
