Sen. Sessions Comments on Energy Legislation in the Senate

Friday, December 7, 2007

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) made the following comments today after the U.S. Senate voted against further consideration of energy legislation:

“Unfortunately, the Senate was put in the position today that it had to reject the House version of the energy bill that was authored by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Her actions violated carefully crafted agreements between the House and Senate and have jeopardized this important piece of legislation. Today’s vote shows that this gambit has been blocked, and we still have the opportunity to move forward with energy legislation without the offending provisions.

“Our nation is blessed with vast natural resources, but those resources are not distributed equally. The legislation voted on today included a one-size-fits-all Renewable Portfolio Standard that would effectively penalize areas of the country, such as the Southeast, where renewable sources, especially wind, are not feasible methods of producing large amounts of electricity.

“Our nation faces serious energy challenges during these times of high fuel prices. We need to take steps to make the cost of energy go down, not up. The best way to accomplish this is to encourage better energy efficiency, greater use of advanced technologies such as nuclear power, and more production of American oil and gas.

“The original legislation included a number of important provisions that would have boosted our usage of alternative fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel, adopted stronger energy efficiency requirements, and increased fuel economy standards for cars and trucks. I am hopeful and optimistic that, with removal of the objectionable provisions, a strong energy bill can now pass that will be good for America and fair to consumers.”
