Sessions Praises Lifting of Presidential Moratorium

Sessions: “Congress Should Respond Quickly By Lifting Congressional Moratorium.”
WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) made the following comments today regarding President Bush’s decision to lift the executive moratorium blocking energy exploration on the Outer Continental Shelf:
“I applaud President Bush for lifting the executive moratorium blocking energy exploration on much of America’s Outer Continental Shelf. The President’s decision to lift the ban is a step toward returning common sense to America’s energy policy. It is one of many actions that we must take to increase supplies, lower prices, and keep American wealth here at home. Congress should respond quickly by lifting the corresponding Congressional moratorium.”
“Our dependence on foreign oil results in an annual transfer of more than $700 billion in American wealth to foreign nations. We know from our experience in the Western and Central Gulf of Mexico that modern technology allows for environmentally safe production of oil and natural gas, and it is time that production is expanded to the Eastern Gulf of Mexico and the coasts. Increased production of American resources will bring additional oil reserves to the market, as well as new investment to American firms, workers, and communities.
“Even with the President’s order today, Congress must still take action to remove a similar Congressional moratorium. Every day Congress sits idle is another day that Americans are forced to pay higher prices at the pump. The Majority Leader should immediately bring legislation to the floor to lift the Congressional ban on OCS energy exploration so that the Senate can pass it before the August recess.”
