Local Artists Featured in White House Christmas Display
Christmas ornaments painted by Mobile residents Kelley Beville Ogburn and Eugenia Foster were selected to be used in the annual holiday decorating of the President’s residence in Washington. This year’s theme is “Red, White, and Blue,” selected by First Lady Laura Bush to celebrate the patriotic spirit that unites America.
The ornaments painted by Ogburn and Foster were officially revealed in the East Wing of the White House on December 2, when Mrs. Bush unveiled the 2008 Holiday Tree.
The artists are among several chosen by members of Alabama’s congressional delegation. Each was asked to design a Christmas ornament for the White House that reflects the spirit of their home state.
U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) selected artist Kelley Beville Ogburn, currently the art director for Mobile Bay Monthly Magazine. Her work is featured in galleries and museums around the nation.
“The White House, especially during the Christmas season, is a truly special place. Mary and I were delighted to see Kelley’s ornament when we visited recently,” Sessions said. “Thousands of visitors to the White House will have the opportunity to enjoy Kelley’s work and see a little piece of Alabama in our nation’s capital.”
Congressman Jo Bonner (R-AL) chose artist Eugenia Foster. Foster has received awards in regional and national exhibits, and her work appears in galleries throughout the Southeast.
“With a camellia, a Mardi Gras float, an oak tree, and the Alabama flag, Eugenia’s ornament embodies what makes Alabama’s First District so special,” Bonner said today. “I am so proud that the more than 60,000 visitors to the White House this Christmas season will see our beautiful ornament on display in the Blue Room of the White House.”
Other Alabama artists represented on the tree are Jan Scofield Breedlove, Carolyn Morris, Mona Ivey, Alexandria Todd, and Antonese Thomas.
