Sen. Sessions Comments on Meeting with Judge Michael Mukasey

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) made the following comments today after meeting with Michael Mukasey, President Bush’s nominee to be Attorney General:
“Judge Mukasey appears to be a man of character and integrity, two qualities that I believe the next Attorney General must possess. The Attorney General must have a backbone strong enough to stand up to the President when he is wrong to avoid errors, and vigorous enough to defend the President’s legitimate actions before tough congressional committees. Judge Mukasey has an excellent background, serving as an Assistant United States Attorney in possibly the toughest section of Manhattan and as a federal judge in the Southern District of New York for 18 years. It is important that the Attorney General have experience on the front lines of the Department of Justice, and I think his time as a federal judge will give him a certain independence that is also necessary. I look forward to the confirmation hearings and to learning more about Judge Mukasey.”
“I am pleased that some of our democratic colleagues have indicated that they believe Judge Mukasey has the experience and independence to warrant their support. The Department of Justice is a critically important part of our government. Judge Mukasey’s challenge will be to act as an effective leader of the department, immediately addressing existing issues and problems in such a way that earns the public’s trust and restores credibility in the organization. It is vital that the Senate move expeditiously with the confirmation process.”
