Advanced Directives

Senator Rockefeller knows that end-of-life care decisions can be extremely difficult. He also knows that end-of-life planning for most Americans is perplexing and disjointed. In response, Senator Rockefeller is leading an effort that would develop standards for end-of-life care, facilitate opportunities for patients to discuss end-of-life issues with a trained professional, and authorize funds for demonstration projects on innovative approaches to end-of-life care.

Senator Rockefeller has introduced several pieces of legislation to meet these goals. His Advance Planning and Compassionate Care Act would ensure that patients' final wishes for end-of-life care are known, respected, and complied with. The Medicare End-of-Life Care Planning Act would require physician consultation regarding advance directives during the initial ``Welcome to Medicare'' physician visit. And his Advance Directives Improvement and Education Act would improve policies for use and portability of advance directives across state lines, and create a public education campaign on the importance of end-of-life care planning.
