12/01/08: Dodd Praises Supreme Court Decision on Islander East Appeal

December 1, 2008

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) today released the following statement applauding the U.S. Supreme Court’s refusal to hear an appeal regarding the proposed construction of the Islander East natural gas pipeline across the floor of the Long Island Sound:

“I am very pleased that the Supreme Court rejected the appeal brought by Islander East. I have long opposed the company’s proposal to build a natural gas pipeline across the Sound, which could disrupt an important wildlife habitat and threaten one of our region’s greatest natural treasures. The Court’s decision upholds the best interests of the State of Connecticut, and hopefully puts this poor-designed proposal to rest once and for all.”

9/17/08: Dodd Statement on Release of Additional LIHEAP Funding

September 17, 2008

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) released the following statement today following the announcement that the Administration has agreed to release the remaining contingency funds available for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

“I’m pleased that the President has finally heeded the request that my colleagues and I have been making for months and released all available LIHEAP funding. Low income families in Connecticut received little more than $500 last winter to help with heating bills that could be as high as four times that amount this year. This $7 million in additional heating assistance will go a long way toward helping Connecticut’s low income households heat their homes this coming winter,” said Dodd.

7/21/08: Senators Push Use It or Lose It Amendments to Energy Speculation Bill

July 21, 2008

U.S. Senators Russ Feingold (D-WI), Chris Dodd (D-CT), and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) are continuing their push to ensure that, before the oil companies seek additional leases, they develop the 68 million acres of federal land they currently lease.  The trio is attempting to offer several amendments to the energy speculation legislation currently being considered by the Senate. Feingold, Dodd and Menendez recently introduced the “Responsible Federal Oil and Gas Lease Act” and “Responsible Ownership of Public Land Act.” The first requires oil companies to show they are either producing oil or gas - or making progress exploring or developing – on current leases before they obtain more.  The Responsible Ownership of Public Land Act, which the trio introduced along with Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), would charge oil companies a fee for every acre of land they lease but do not use for production.  The Senate could vote on the oil speculation legislation as early as Tuesday, July 22.

7/16/08: Senators Dodd, Feingold, and Menendez Tell Oil Companies to Use 68 Million Acres or Lose It

July 16, 2008

This morning, Christopher Dodd (D-CT), Senators Russ Feingold (D-WI), and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) discussed their legislation that would push oil companies to use the 68 million acres of federal land already leased to them or otherwise relinquish it. Republicans are calling for coastline drilling that would not produce a drop of oil until 2017 and would not lower gas prices ever. On the other hand, Democrats are supporting proposals to help lower gas prices today by cracking down on speculation in the oil markets, proposals to increase domestic production by pushing the oil companies to use these 68 million acres and proposals to develop renewable energy and advanced alternative fuels for the long term.

7/14/08: Dodd: President's Drilling Plan Paints a False Picture for the American People

July 14, 2008

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) released the following statement today on the President’s announcement that he lift the presidential ban on drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). Dodd is the co-sponsor of two bills that would require the oil companies to explore the 68 million acres of space they already lease. The Responsible Ownership of Public Land Act would charge oil companies a fee for every acre of land they lease but do not use for production.  The second piece of legislation, entitled the Responsible Federal Oil and Gas Lease Act, mandates that oil companies either produce on or seek to develop their existing federal leases, or relinquish the leases when they expire.

6/19/08: Snowe, Dodd, Kerry Legislation would Address Energy Crisis in Northeast

June 19, 2008

U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) and Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.) today introduced legislation that would stipulate that if the price of home heating oil was over $4 per gallon this winter that the Home Heating Oil Reserve would be released on a staggered schedule throughout the winter.

6/18/08: Dodd Responds to President's Comments on Offshore Drilling

June 18, 2008

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) today made the following statement in response to President Bush’s remarks to urging Congress to lift the ban on offshore drilling.

“For the President to call for new drilling on new and fragile lands when oil companies already do not use more than 75 percent of the acreage they currently have under lease is ludicrous. The time has come for Congress to tell these companies they can either ‘use it or lose it’ when it comes to their current leases. I call on my colleagues in the Senate, and indeed all Americans, to reject the President’s misleading statements.”

6/18/08: Dodd, Durbin, Menendez Work to Combat High Gas Prices

Introduces Bill to Penalize Oil Companies for Failing to Utilize Available Energy Resources

June 18, 2008

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), with Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ), last week introduced legislation that will help lower gas prices by compelling big oil companies to begin utilizing the 68 million acres that they lease but thus far have not used to produce energy.  Representatives Edward Markey, Maurice Hinchey, Rahm Emanuel, and Nick Rahall announced companion legislation in the House of Representatives earlier this past week.
