Boy Scout Commemorative Coins

Legislation Passes Congress

Monday, September 29, 2008

WASHINGTON – Congress passed legislation Saturday night to create a $1 silver coin to recognize the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.

The legislation instructs the U.S. Mint to produce 350,000 commemorative coins in honor of the anniversary. A share of the proceeds from the sale of the coins will be donated to fund scouting activities in underserved areas of the country. Minting of the coins, which will occur between February 8, 2010 and January 11, 2011, will be at no cost to the taxpayer.

The bill was sponsored in the House by U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions (TX-32), and in the Senate by U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL). Both Rep. Sessions and Sen. Sessions achieved the rank of Eagle Scouts.

“Boy Scouts are a significant part of American culture, shaping the values, citizenship, and skills of millions of young men,” Rep. Sessions said. “As an Eagle Scout with four generations of Boy Scouts in my family, I strongly value the Boy Scouts’ history of instilling a sense of duty to God, country, and self. I am very pleased that the ‘100 Years of Scouting’ commemorative coin will be an important and influential symbol for Scouts of all ages and raise awareness of the importance of Scouting programs for future generations.”

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law: to help people at all times, to keep one’s self physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

“I am pleased that the Senate has approved this legislation to mint a commemorative coin celebrating an important mark in the Boy Scout’s history. Scouting has been a positive influence on millions of young men across the country,” said Sessions. “I remember well my experiences as a Scout, and the valuable principles I learned then continue to guide me during my work as a United States Senator. This coin will help recognize the positive contributions that scouting has made in the development of so many young men in our country.”

Since 1910, over 111 million youth have participated in scouting programs, making it the largest youth organization in the United States.

There are currently three million youth and one million adult leaders in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing programs across the country, accounting for more than 6.5 million hours of community service and 75,000 community improvement projects in the past four years alone.

Congress granted the Boy Scouts of America a federal charter in 1916. 248 members of the 110th Congress have participated in Boy Scouts of America as scouts or adult leaders.

The physical design of the coin, which has not yet been determined, will be symbolic of the 100 years of service by the Boy Scouts. The minting of the coins will be at no cost to the taxpayer.

The legislation will now go to the White House for President Bush’s signature.
