Sen. Hutchison Issues a Statement on the Passing of Ray Miller

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Texas’ senior senator, released the following statement today on the passing of the former newscaster and news director of KPRC-TV in Houston, Ray Miller:

“I was saddened to learn of the passing of my friend and former colleague Ray Miller. He gave me my first job, taking a chance on a new law school graduate who had never had a class in journalism. I learned more from him than I could have ever imagined possible. Ray Miller was the legendary news director at that station. A celebrated journalist, he was a professional mentor to me and so many reporters over his 50 plus years in broadcast news.

“Ray served honorably in both World War II and the Korean War. He was the author of ten books on Texas, and his love of our state is reflected in the books and television programs that he produced.

“Among Ray’s accomplishments, in 1969 he created “The Eyes of Texas,” the weekly show that celebrated Texas culture and its history. Ray’s soft, folksy voice and gift for storytelling are evident in those early episodes.

“Ray was a celebrity in Houston, someone who thousands of Houstonians met personally around town, but even if they didn’t, they felt they knew him.

“Ray will be remembered for what he has given to the city of Houston and to the State of Texas. My heartfelt condolences are with his family.”
