Sens. Hutchison, Cornyn Urge President Bush to Include 11 Additional Counties in Disaster Declaration for Hurricane Ike
Ask that Counties be Added to the Original Declaration; Support State’s Request to Increase Federal Cost-share from 75 Percent to 100 Percent

WASHINGTON - Late Friday night, U.S. Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Texas’ senior senator, and John Cornyn (R-TX) sent a letter to President George W. Bush urging that the White House increase the federal cost share of the recovery from Hurricane Ike from 75 percent to 100 percent. Senators Hutchison and Cornyn also asked that the White House include 11 additional Texas counties in the September 8, 2008 Presidential Disaster Declaration request as a result of the threat to Texas from severe weather and flooding from Hurricane Ike.

TEXT OF THE LETTER

September 12, 2008

Today, the State of Texas has requested that 11 additional counties be included in their September 8, 2008, Presidential Disaster Declaration request as a result of the imminent threat to Texas from severe weather and flooding accompanying Hurricane Ike.

Specifically, Texas has asked that the counties of Burleson, Coryell, Freestone, Grimes, Houston, Madison, Milam, Leon, Robertson, Rusk, and Washington be added to the original declaration. We urge you to expedite the consideration of this request, as the declaration is critical to ensuring that important recovery assistance is made available to residents in these counties. Additionally, we support the State’s request that the federal cost-share be increased from 75 percent to 100 percent.

We appreciate the efforts underway by the Federal Government to review the State’s request in a timely manner, and ask that you give it due consideration. You may be certain that we will work with the Administration to aid the victims of this disaster.

Sincerely,

//S//
