Community Safety

Senator Dorgan has worked throughout his time in Congress to ensure that law enforcement agencies, firefighters, and other first responders have the equipment and personnel they need to keep our communities safe.

Dorgan authored legislation called Dru's Law, named after UND student Dru Sjodin, which strengthened monitoring of violent sex offenders and established a National Sex Offender's Registry that is accessible online. As Chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, he has also supported increased law enforcement resources for North Dakota's Indian Reservations through Operation Peacekeeper on the Standing Rock Reservation and has proposed legislation, the Tribal Law and Order Act, to provide increased law enforcement in Indian Country. He has also worked to secure funding for law enforcement and first responders as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
