Dear Friends:

Thank you for reading the Lugar Letter with updates on my activities in the U.S. Senate and in Indiana.

One of the most exciting moments of the past month included the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Fund for Hoosier Excellence.  We began this program 25 years ago to conspicuously recognize outstanding minority students, and each year present ten college scholarships.  These outstanding students have been leaders in their high schools, and we hope they will continue to lead by example while attending Indiana’s colleges and universities.

At Riley Hospital, my wife Char and I also had the opportunity to encourage reading and scholarship in young Hoosiers as part of the “Reach Out and Read” program which give books to children at pediatric check-ups from six months to five years of age.  I’m excited about the sense of imagination that these books bring to children who often need the inspiration.  If they continue to read at an early age, they become good students.

I thank you, again, for taking time to share your insights.  Please write to me when I can be helpful or with your own suggestions and opinions about current issues.

Sincerely,

Dick Lugar
