CONGRESSMAN DAVIS ANNOUNCES GRANT FOR REPAIRS ON THE ELIZABETHTON COVERED BRIDGE

April 7, 2008

Washington, DC -- Congressman David Davis today announced that the Elizabethton covered bridge in Carter County will receive $320,000 for renovation and repairs.  The grant is administered through the Federal Highway Administration’s National Historic Covered Bridge Preservation Program.   Davis issued the following statement:

The covered bridge in Elizabethton is a beautiful historic structure,” said Davis.  “This covered bridge is distinctly unique because it is the oldest bridge of this nature still in use in Tennessee.  This grant will ultimately help with the costs of repairs and renovations needed to maintain use and also aid in the economic development of Elizabethton and Carter Counties,” Davis added.

The project on the Elizabethton Covered Bridge in Carter County involves the replacement of steel rods and thrust bearings, replacement of miscellaneous timber elements, repair and repainting of clapboard siding, and the installation of a fire-prevention system.
