Sessions Comments on Boeing's Appeal of Tanker Decision

Monday, March 10, 2008

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) made the following comments today regarding Boeing’s protest of the Air Force’s decision in the KC-X tanker competition:

“I am disappointed that Boeing concluded that it should protest the Air Force’s decision because doing so could delay delivery of these much needed tankers. Even so, the losing bidder of course has the right to appeal. Unlike an attempt at an unprecedented political override of the decision, Boeing’s protest is in accordance with the rules of the competition.

“The Northrop Grumman/EADS team clearly met all of the qualifications to bid on this contract. The Air Force’s sole responsibility in such a competition is to select the best airplane for our military. The Air Force set out five criteria for judging the proposals, and the Northrop Grumman/EADS won on four counts and tied on the fifth. This was one of the most open, fair, and transparent competitions in the Pentagon’s history.

“Boeing’s protest will be judged by the independent GAO. Frankly, based on what I have seen, I am confident that the GAO will uphold the Air Force’s decision in favor of Northrop Grumman/EADS.”
