CONGRESSMAN DAVIS ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF JUDICIAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE WEBSITE: http://aladvcomm.com

BIRMINGHAM  --  Congressman Artur Davis today announced the launch of a website created to serve the online needs of the Advisory Committee Regarding Prospective Presidential Nominations for Federal District Judgeships and United States Attorneys in the State of Alabama: http://aladvcomm.com

Davis established the committee last week to assist him in evaluating the merit of potential candidates for U.S. Attorney positions and federal district judgeships and making recommendations to the President through an open and transparent process.  Currently, the Advisory Committee is seeking applications from experienced litigators for the positions of United States Attorney for the Northern, Middle and Southern Districts of Alabama.  The committee will screen applicants, conduct interviews and make recommendations to Davis.

Anyone interested in being considered for a position should visit the site for all information regarding the application process and should initiate his or her consideration by downloading a questionnaire from the site regarding legal experience and record, and other relevant aspects for evaluating the applicant’s qualifications.  In addition, each applicant is required to register for consideration by the Advisory Committee.  This information will be displayed on the website to provide public notice of the names of applicants for each position.

All applications for United States Attorney must be submitted in written form to the committee by December 31, 2008.   All applications for district judge must be submitted by January 20, 2009.

The committee is comprised of law school deans as well as current and former judges.  The complete list of commitee members includes:

Delores Boyd, a former United States Magistrate Judge in the Middle District of Alabama

• Dean John Carroll of Cumberland Law School, a former United States Magistrate judge in the Middle District of Alabama

The Honorable U.W. Clemon, who will be vacating his seat as a United States District Judge in the Northern District of Alabama

Ralph Cook, a former Alabama Supreme Court Justice

Douglas Johnstone, a former Alabama Supreme Court Justice

The Honorable Caryl Privett, a Circuit Judge in Jefferson County and a former United States Attorney in the Northern District of Alabama

Dean Kenneth Randall of the University of Alabama School of Law

“I have asked this outstanding panel to assess potential candidates based on three criteria: their demonstrated legal acumen, their experience, and their reputations for integrity and independence. These factors, and not a history of political activity or loyalty, ought to determine who will hold lifetime judicial appointments and who will wield the enormous discretionary power of serving as chief federal prosecutors.  This seven member committee adopted a specific process that I believe will provide more transparency and more merit-based scrutiny than Alabamians have ever seen in the context of federal appointments,” Davis said.
