DOLE STATEMENT ON ECONOMIC RESCUE PACKAGE

September 21st, 2008 - Washington, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole today made the following statement regarding the proposed $700 billion rescue package that would give the U.S. Treasury Department unprecedented ability to purchase distressed, highly illiquid mortgage-related assets from unstable financial institutions with significant U.S. operations:

“Earlier this afternoon, I was briefed by Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke regarding the current state of the U.S. financial and housing markets. It is clear that Secretary Paulson and Chairman Bernanke believe that moving forward with this proposal is critically important to return stability and confidence to the financial markets.

“As a member of the Senate Banking Committee, I continue to closely follow the on-going negotiations between Congressional leaders and the Administration. I will remain engaged in this process as a strong voice for taxpayers to ensure that these dramatic steps are absolutely necessary.”
