STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT-ELECT OBAMA’S NATIONAL SECURITY NOMINEES

December 1st, 2008 - St. Paul, MN - “I applaud President-elect Obama’s selection of Senator Hillary Clinton, Secretary Robert Gates, and General Jim Jones to serve as the principals of his national security and foreign policy teams. I believe Senator Clinton has the ability and stature to be a skillful diplomat on behalf of this nation. Secretary Gates has demonstrated an ability to lead the Defense Department in an honorable manner during these challenging times, and keeping him in place will provide some needed continuity as we continue to fight two wars. General Jim Jones, who served as commandant of the Marine Corps and the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, is well suited for the position of National Security Advisor.”

“During Senator Clinton’s confirmation hearing I do anticipate there will be questions regarding possible conflict of interests stemming from President Clinton’s business dealings, and I am confident that she will be forthright and transparent with her answers. I also look forward to hearings on the nomination of Dr. Susan Rice for Ambassador to the United Nations. While it appears Dr. Rice has sufficient qualifications, I intend to vigorously pursue her commitment to reforming the U.N. I have long said that the U.N. can play a critical role in promoting peace and stability in the international community, and we must ensure that we have a strong and credible voice advocating for real reform.”
