Senator Lugar & ISTA Partner for Book Drive
Richard G. Lugar, United States Senator for Indiana

Senator Lugar and the ISTA present a book drive Oct. 25-Jan. 9

“ISTA is excited to join Senator Lugar in the Reach Out and Read program.  Research shows that putting books in the hands of children from an early age proves beneficial,” says ISTA Vice President Teresa Meredith.  “Better readers are more likely to stay in school longer and that translates into advantages for life.”

“I am pleased to partner with ISTA and Reach Out and Read on this exciting project,” said Senator Lugar.  “Giving children the proper tools will put them on track for a better education. Books provide that vital function. Reading with children is essential so that it may enhance their learning, challenge their imagination and open their eyes to new possibilities.”

Reach Out and Read (ROR) promotes literacy as a standard part of pediatric care so that children grow up with books and a love of reading.  ROR trains doctors and nurses to stress the importance of parents reading aloud to children and gives books to children at pediatric check-ups from six months to five years of age. A special focus is placed on children growing up in poverty. By building on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers, ROR helps families and communities cultivate early literacy skills so that children enter school prepared to succeed at reading.

Senator Lugar’s education website, EducateIndiana, explores issues faced by parents, teachers and students. The purpose of the website is to share constructive ideas about education and offer students, parents, teachers, and administrators education tools that can be used both inside and outside of the classroom.

In addition, Senator Lugar and the ISTA have started a web-based initiative to recognize teachers and celebrate their vital role in preparing our future leaders.

Please contact ISTA at 1-800-382-4037 for additional information and drop off locations.
