January:

Change in Bibliographic Record Coding

Effective December 1, 2004, GPO’s Office of Bibliographic Services (OBS) will be changing its practice of coding records for microfiche reproductions of serials. The OBS catalogers code the DtSt Field (leader position 008/06) with “d” to indicate that these reproductions have ceased. This practice was followed to accommodate the paper production cycle of the Monthly Catalog.

OBS will now adhere to MARC21 Format for Bibliographic Data standard practice of coding 533 fields, subfield 7 and position 0 as “d” to indicate that the microfiche reproductions of a serial has ceased. This code appears in the 539 subfield “a” in GPO’s records in OCLC WorldCat. OBS catalogers will use notes and other MARC21 fields to indicate that GPO no longer distributes the paper version.

February:

GPO Adds OCLC Holdings Symbol for Regional Depository Libraries

Beginning February 1, 2005, the OCLC holdings symbol of 30 Regional depository libraries will be added to the bibliographic records GPO contributes to OCLC WorldCat. Working with GPO, OCLC has developed an automated batch loading process to set the holdings, which will be run daily.

This project will bring improved public and library community awareness of resources available in Federal depository library collections through an increased number of bibliographic access points and facilitated interlibrary loan of tangible U.S. Government publications.

Adding OCLC symbols to GPO-produced cataloging originated as a suggestion from Regional depository librarians. GPO would like to thank the depository libraries at the following institutions for participating in this project:

  • Auburn University at Montgomery (AAM)
  • Arizona State Library (AZP)
