New Service Process
- For Builders, Developers & Contractors
PSE&G’s new service installation consists of five (5) main steps; the key to a successful project is communication between you and PSE&G.  This guide will help you understand the requirements and responsibilities during each step of installation.

Ensure your construction site is within PSE&G's electric and/or gas service territories before initiating a project. 

Initiation

PSE&G will review your request and provide a response based on your requirements.  Please refer to the trenching information page for typical lead times and construction details for Residential Buried Underground Distribution (BUD).  For New Jersey rules governing the BUD, please see the NJ Tariff and/or New Jersey Administrative Code.  You will receive the DWMS reference number for your project.  All future inquiries will require this reference number in order to provide information about your project.

To start your project call PSE&G; for Middlesex County and North, call 800-722-0256 and for Mercer County and South, call 800-832-0076.  You can also apply online or download the appropriate forms.

To process your application quickly and efficiently, you will need the following:

  • Approved site plans or foundation in place (call your PSE&G representative for details).
  • Contact Information for the Customer/Authorized Representative.
  • Billing Information.
  • Service Location and Use Information:
       (possibly including Pole/Pad Number from Service Location, if available)
  • For Electric Service, you will also need the following Information:
    • If New Service -- load details for the new meter(s) you are requesting,
      including Volts, Amps, Phase and air conditioning load for the New Service.
    • If Upgrading/Moving/Splitting Service -- load details for both the existing meters and new meters, including existing and new Volts, Amps, and Phase.
  • For New Gas Service, you will also need the following information:
    • Project start date/expected service date
    • Load details for all meters required, including required pressure.
  • For New Service for a Residential Subdivision, you will also need the following information:
    • Detailson the different types of "Unit" in your residential Subdivision,
      including electric and gas load details, pressures, Volts, Amps, and Phase.
    • Building Phase Information -- How many of each type of unit will be created in a phase, timelines for each phase, etc.

Complete the on-line form in its entirety and submit, or fill out the Electric and/or Gas form and fax it back as indicated on the instruction sheet.

Scheduling

Once you have decided to go ahead with your project, an estimated construction start date will be provided.  Be sure to follow-up with your Construction representative for details.

Construction

PSE&G will make every effort to complete your installation on time.  Your cooperation and site readiness is important to complete your installation quickly and efficiently.  Please ensure the following:

  • Areas of installation should be clear of obstructions and construction debris.
  • Site must be within 6" of final grade, if underground electric or gas lines will be installed.
  • All curbs must be installed prior to PSE&G installing any facilities.

Inspection

The house wiring and plumbing must be inspected by the local inspection authority prior to PSE&G installing your electric and/or gas meter.

There are specific requirements for electric and gas meters:

  • Electric:
    • Complete an application for wiring inspectionand forward to your local electric division location.
    • Provide the DWMS project number when picking up materials.
    • Local inspection authority must inspect your installation and provide PSE&G with a Certificate of Approval (cut-in card) before we can connect service.
    • PSE&G will inspect as required to ensure the installation meets safety requirements.

  • Gas:
    • There must be an active electric service to the building where the gas meter is to be set.  Refer to the Meter Set Guidelines document before you locate your meter and house riser.
    • At least one major appliance must be installed and ready to be turned on and adjusted at the time of meter installation.
    • The municipal “piping pressure test” yellow sticker must be affixed to the house piping or the premises.

Meter Set

Meters are installed only after all approved inspections have been received.  Call PSE&G’s Construction Inquiry office to request meter installations four (4) weeks prior to completion.  For Middlesex County and North, call 800-722-0256 and for Mercer County and South, call 800-832-0076.  You will need to provide us with contact and billing information to issue meter installation requests.

There must be an active electric service to the building where the gas meter is to be set. Refer to the Meter Set Guidelines document before you locate your meter and house riser.
