Security
Unparalleled
Strength
Nuclear power plants are the strongest
and best protected industrial facilities in the world.
The outer walls of the domed containment buildings that
house STP's reactors are four feet thick and are reinforced
with hundreds of pounds of steel bars in every cubic
yard of concrete. ![](picts/paragraph-line.jpg)
Heavily
Protected
The containment buildings are inside a protected area
surrounded by multiple fences, vehicle barriers, surveillance
systems and motion detectors. The area is constantly
patrolled by heavily armed officers with SWAT-level
skills and capabilities. The officers are specially
trained to stop an assault by commandos.

Restricted
Access
Access
to the protected area is restricted, and only granted
after extensive background checks. Employees must pass
through metal detectors, explosives detectors and biometric
scanners in armed checkpoints before entering the plant
area.

Rugged
Storage
The
protected area also holds the buildings where spent
fuel from the reactors is temporarily stored. The
structures are as rugged as the containment buildings.
The spent fuel eventually will be moved to a permanent
storage facility 1,000 feet underground on
a remote and heavily guarded federal reservation in
Nevada.

Even
Greater Security
The
already tight security at nuclear power plants was increased
following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The airspace above
plants is now monitored by the Federal Aviation Administration
and the U.S. Military, and other protections have
been added. The details, however, are classified.
