Residential Buildings reports, data tables and questionnaires

Released: May 2008

The Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) is a periodic sample survey about energy consumption, expenditures and related characteristics of U.S. households.  Links to previously published documents are provided below. Beginning in 1997, reports were only issued electronically. Additional electronic releases are available on the RECS homepage.

The basic unit of analysis in RECS is the occupied housing unit. For the sampled unit to be eligible for the RECS, it must be occupied as a usual or permanent place of residence at the time of the interviewer’s first visit. All RECS surveys have used a stratified, multistage, area probability sample design to produce estimates for the nine Census divisions and four most populated states (California, Florida, New York and Texas).

1/Reference Period for Statistical Tables: Through 1990, the reference month for population and housing unit totals was November; in 1993, it became July because it was benchmarked to the Current Population Survey. Through the 1984 survey year, consumption and expenditures estimates represented the 12-month period from September of the survey year through April of the following year. Since 1987, the reference period has been the calendar year coinciding with the survey year.
2/ Type of Report: For each survey conducted, features of the household, housing unit and energy related characteristics are included in a Housing Characteristics report. Estimates for consumption, expenditures and end uses are printed in separate reports. The exception is 1997 where housing characteristics and consumption and expenditure data were published together in one report. Detailed regional reports were printed from 1980 through 1990; since then, limited sub-national estimates were included in the main publications for the RECS survey year.
3/ Special Reports: EIA periodically publishes special reports on RECS methodology, emerging topics in residential energy, consumption trends and other analyses.
