EIA revises its first-round weekly estimates of State-level coal production using quarterly mine-level coal production data when they become available from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).  This method of revision guarantees that EIA’s revised weekly coal production estimates for each past quarter conform with the MSHA surveyed data. 

EIA has always made revisions to its weekly estimates using quarterly production data when those data became available.  The revised estimates have been published by EIA in its weekly coal production tables.  However, EIA has not provided the revised data to the user community in an easily accessible format.  In order to make the revised data generally accessible, EIA will keep a running compilation of revised data available on this web page.

The revised weekly estimates can be accessed from the table below.  State and U.S. totals in each yearly table agree with EIA’s published data.

EIA uses a statistical model to make the first-round estimates.  The revision scales the first-round weekly estimates to agree with MSHA quarterly surveyed data.  The Federal Government does not survey coal producers on a weekly basis, so the precision of individual weekly estimates cannot be assessed. 

Typically, revised estimates differ to some degree with the weekly and monthly first-round estimates as posted on the Weekly Coal Production web page.  For most applications of these data users are advised not to mix data generations; i.e., to use only first-round estimates or, alternately, only revised estimates.

In the normal weekly coal production table, EIA calculates running totals for the latest 52-week period and year-to-date.  These running totals, for the most recent year, contain first-round estimates for some weeks and revised estimates for other weeks.  Usually within 90 days of the close of the most recent calendar quarter, EIA incorporates the latest MSHA production data and revises its week-by-week coal production estimates for that quarter.  Thereafter, running totals that are reported in EIA’s weekly table include all revised estimates, combined with most recent first-round estimates available at that time.  Consequently, there are weeks when the running totals show uneven breaks with the running totals reported in the previous weeks.

All weeks reported in the tables end on a Saturday.  The estimates for the first and last weeks in a year include estimated coal production only for the days that occurred in the year.  In 1994 and 2000, January 1 was a Saturday and a holiday.  EIA assumed no coal was produced on those days.  Therefore, for 1994 and 2000, “Week 1” started on January 2 and ran through January 8.
