The Financial Reporting System Public Data

Introduction

The Financial Reporting System (FRS) is designed to permit review of the functional performance of the major U.S. energy-producing companies in total, as well as by specific functions and geographic areas of operation. The financial reporting schedules obtain data on revenues, costs, and profits, thereby indicating financial flows and performance characteristics. In addition, Form EIA-28 collects balance sheet data (i.e., acumulated property, plant, and equipment, etc.), along with data on new investment in these accounts. To complement the financial data, a series of statistical schedules are included to trace physical activity patterns and to evaluate several physical/financial relationships.

Description

These files contain disclosure-free aggregate data from the Energy Information Administration's Financial Reporting System (FRS) database. The data cover the years 1977 through 2007. The data are organized by the EIA-28 survey form schedules. The EIA-28 survey form is also available for those interested in viewing the form in its hard copy format.

Note: If you have difficulty downloading/opening any of the speadsheet files, try right-clicking on the file link, then choose "save link as" (or "save target as"), and save the file into a directory on the hard drive of your computer. Data Suppression

Suppressed or missing data appear as blank fields. Following is a summary of the primary data missing from the files:
  • Eliminations column (B) on schedule 5110;
  • Schedules 5150, 5250, 5750, and 5850 (Eliminations in Consolidation schedules);
  • Consolidated Petroleum Statement of Income - column (A), the 3 eliminations columns (B,D,I) on schedule 5210; and
  • much of the foreign geographical data on schedule 5246.
  • Consolidated Downstream Natural Gas Statement of Income - column (A), the 2 eliminations columns (B,D) on schedule 5710;
  • Schedule 5741 (Downstream Natural Gas Output Statistics).
  • Consolidated Electric Power Statement of Income - only Consolidated Domestic, Non-regulated Generation, Marketing/Trading, and Consolidated Foreign data are presented on schedule 5810, all other columns are suppressed; and
  • Schedules 5811 (General Operating Expense Detail), 5812 (Purchases and Sales of Fuel and Electric Power, and 5841 (Capacity and Output Statistics).
    NOTE: In 1993 the former Soviet Union and East Europe were added as a new geographical reporting area. However, to avoid disclosure of individual company data, much of this data has been suppressed. In schedules 5241 and 5246, FSU & E. Europe have been combined with OECD Europe for the years 1993 through 2004(columns G & H in schedule 5241 and columns F & G in schedule 5246).
