Levin Statement on Supreme Court Decision in Boumediene v. Bush

WASHINGTON – Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., today made this statement following a ruling by the Supreme Court that detainees at Guantanamo Bay have the right to bring habeas corpus petitions in U.S. federal courts:

“The Supreme Court’s decision today is an important victory for the rule of law. It is important for our national security that we have the ability to detain those who pose a threat to us, but it is equally important to our own system of government, our values, and the protection of our own soldiers in future conflicts that we not do so in a manner that is arbitrary or unlawful. The Supreme Court, in the Boumediene case, has done the necessary job of balancing these two objectives.”
