MESSAGE FROM CONGRESSMAN STENY H. HOYER
As the work of the 110th Congress completed its second month, we continued to build on the accomplishments of the successful first 100 hours agenda.
This month the House passed a bipartisan resolution expressing our unequivocal support of U.S. troops and disapproval of the President's plan to send an additional 21,000 combat troops to Iraq - sending a strong message to the Administration that this Congress is not going to sit idly by while failing policies in Iraq put our troops and our national security at risk. The People's House also reached consensus on a small business tax relief package that will hopefully pave the way for the first increase in the minimum wage in more than ten years.
The House also will soon begin work on the federal budget, starting with consideration of the budget proposal President Bush sent to Congress earlier this month. After reviewing his budget, I have determined that although there are some positive investments in local projects, there is room for great improvement in terms of addressing the needs of Maryland’s families. My full analysis of the budget and its impact on Maryland is included below.
Several events celebrating February as Black History Month have afforded us opportunities to recognize the contributions African Americans have made to the development of this county. Two weeks ago, I had the joy of attending the 26th Annual Black History Month Breakfast with local news broadcaster Maureen Bunyan as the featured speaker. The breakfast, which was also attended by Senator Ben Cardin, drew more than 400 community and civic leaders from the Fifth Congressional District. I also had the pleasure of participating in a special kick-off event for the Veterans History Project (VHP) at the College Park Aviation Museum that involved a group of Tuskegee Airmen, America’s first black military pilots. The VHP is a special project that collects the oral histories of our nation’s veterans to store them in the public trust at the Library of Congress. Hoyer Attends 26th Annual Black History Month Breakfast Featuring ABC 7 Anchor Maureen Bunyan
On Monday, February 12, Congressman Hoyer attended the 26th Annual Black History Month Breakfast in Waldorf, MD, where he was joined by Senator Ben Cardin and Maureen Bunyan, news anchor for WJLA Channel 7, who gave the keynote address. More than 400 community leaders from Charles, Calvert, St. Mary’s, Prince George’s and Anne Arundel Counties attended the event to pay tribute to Black History Month.

Hoyer Kicks-off Veterans History Project at College Park Aviation Museum
Congressman Hoyer visited the College Park Aviation Museum to initiate the museum's participation in the Veterans History Project and to commemorate the contributions of the Tuskegee Airmen, America’s first black military pilots, whose triumphs are particularly resonant as the nation celebrates Black History Month. While at the museum, Congressman Hoyer had an opportunity to interview a veteran of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, First Lieutenant Curtis Robinson, and record his story for the project.
