"Even though this is a very awkward moment for the President and the Congress, it is important that we not lose sight of our responsibilities to deal with the problems that face all Americans. It is agreed that we must roll up our sleeves, but the question is whether we will fight each other or go to work. I want us to go work. I want us to protect Social Security and improve education and economic opportunities. We also must help protect the personal security of all Americans and keep them safe from crime and acts of terrorism."
