Washington, D.C. – Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA), Senator John F. Kerry (D-MA) and Representative Edward J. Markey (D-MA) today announced that the 7th District of Massachusetts is set to receive $9.231 million in federal funds for various projects in the Fiscal Year 2005 Omnibus Appropriations bill. The House approved the spending bill on Saturday November 20.

“Senator Kerry, Representative Markey, and I have been working hard to bring Federal investment to the region in transportation, social services, healthcare and education,” said Senator Kennedy. “These projects will strengthen our state’s ability to meet the challenges of the new century and continue to provide quality services to the people of Massachusetts.”

"These projects will help reduce commuting times, expand access to quality health care and make other important investments in education and technology in our area," Senator Kerry said. "By making these investments in our communities, we are investing in our future. I am pleased to work with Congressman Markey and Senator Kennedy to obtain funding for these important initiatives."

Rep. Markey said: “Our district received a real boost from the Federal government over the weekend. From constructing a new Emergency Department in Everett, to expanding the River’s Edge development project, to fixing our roads, these funds will help meet the growing needs of our community. These projects will create new jobs while enhancing the health, education, safety and beauty of our towns.” Projects for the 7th District of Massachusetts that are funded under the Omnibus Appropriations Bill: • $400,000 for the construction of a new Emergency Department at Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett. This new facility will help meet the growing need for emergency care and the complex medical and psychiatric conditions of the communities served. • $220,500 to help the Mystic Valley Development Commission, comprised of the cities of Everett, Malden and Medford, Massachusetts, to continue work on the River’s Edge regional technology development project, previously called TeleCom City. (more) • $2 million for the downtown revitalization of Pleasant St in Malden. • $2 million for maintenance and repairs along the I-95/Rte. 20 Interchange in Waltham. • $2 million for improvements at the Wonderland Station in Revere. • $145,500 for the Malden Immigrant Learning Center to upgrade their facilities, create more space to accommodate the demand for their services and help them retain their place leader in the field of Family Literacy and Intergenerational Learning.

• $165,000 for a Global Positioning System (GPS) offender tracking pilot program for the Massachusetts Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office. This program promises to provide an extremely cost- effective alternative to prison for low risk or first time offenders, reduce jail overcrowding, and improve public safety. • $300,000 for the Commuter Ferry Project in Winthrop. • $1 million for the construction of the new Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University in Waltham. This new facility will house a range of health-related activities including health policy research, the implementation and evaluation of health care demonstration projects, and graduate professional education, including two federal training programs for doctoral students focused on health policy and health services research and research on alcoholism and alcohol abuse policy. • $1 million to assist in the construction of the J. Joseph Moakley Medical Services Building at Boston Medical Center. This funding will help build a new ambulatory medical services building and centralize cancer care services for Boston’s most vulnerable populations # # #
