Senate Committee Approves $1.5 million in Gloucester Transportation Funding

Thursday, May 27, 1999

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) today announced that today the Senate Appropriations Committee approved $1.5 million in federal funding for construction of an intermodal transportation center in Gloucester.

Senator Kerry said, "I am pleased that the Senate has taken the lead on this important transportation project. Once completed, this rail station will serve the residents and visitors of Gloucester, reduce air pollution and assist in the economic development of the Cape Ann region. I look forward to working with Senator Kennedy and Congressman Tierney to make sure that this project is fully funded in the final spending bill."

Senator Kennedy said, "This is great news for the region's economy and livability. The project is a model for communities seeking to foster smart growth and improve public services."

The funding of this project, coordinated by the Cape Ann Transportation Authority and the City of Gloucester, will be used to continue work on the Gloucester Intermodal Transportation Center. The center will house tourist services, a commuter rail ticket office and restrooms. Plans also include parking for 208 cars, a commuter "kiss and ride" area, and a taxi stand.
