Washington, DC – The Senate passed an amendment sponsored by Senator John F. Kerry with the support of Representative John Tierney and Newburyport Mayor Lisa Mead that transfers a Coast Guard lighthouse on Plum Island to the city of Newburyport, Massachusetts.

"Plum Island lighthouse is a national treasure," said Senator Kerry. "I am pleased to have been able to join with Congressman Tierney and Mayor Mead to ensure that this historic treasure will be preserved and protected for generations to come. The Coast Guard has always been a good friend and neighbor in Massachusetts and this is truly the result of great cooperation between local and federal government. As a grateful resident of Massachusetts, I would like to thank the Coast Guard for assisting with transferring this historic landmark to Newburyport so that it can be preserved and protected for the citizens and visitors of the City to enjoy for years to come."

Representative Tierney said, "The effort to transfer the Plum Island Lighthouse to the City of Newburyport has been a truly cooperative one among the City, the Coast Guard and the many friends of Plum Island who want to see the lighthouse preserved for generations to come. I am happy to have worked alongside Mayor Mead and Senator Kerry to see this project through to a successful completion."

Mayor Mead said, "I want to thank Senator Kerry and Representative Tierney for their leadership and their cooperation in preserving this important part of Newburyport's history.
